Terms of Service

These are the terms for using Rowdy — the app, and getrowdy.app. By creating an account or using either, you’re agreeing to them. Read the parts about safety and virtual items closely; that’s where the substance is.

Rowdy hasn’t launched. Today the only thing you can do is join the waitlist on this site. The sections below describing the app apply from the moment you can create an account, and are published now so they’re readable before you sign up for anything.

1. Who can use Rowdy

You must be 18 or older to create a Rowdy account. We ask for your date of birth once, at sign-up, to confirm this — see our Privacy Policy for exactly how that works and why we don’t keep the date itself. Some nights are hosted in a bar context; everyone joining one of those must additionally be 21 or older. Lying about your age to get past either gate is a violation of these terms and grounds for immediate termination.

2. What Rowdy is

Rowdy is a social party game for crews of 2–8. Instead of drawing a dare for yourself, you hand one to someone else in your crew; they complete it and a crewmate witnesses it. The person who completed the dare earns experience points and Schmeckels, an in-app currency described in Section 4; the person who handed them the card earns a smaller share of Schmeckels. Witnessing a dare does not itself pay anything, and a separate bonus reaches everyone in a night once the crew has cleared enough dares together. Declining a dare is always available, always free of consequence, and never requires a reason.

3. Your account and your content

You’re responsible for what happens under your account: the display name you choose, and — once those features exist — any custom quest you write or photo you upload. Don’t impersonate anyone, don’t upload anything you don’t have the right to share, and don’t use Rowdy to harass, endanger, or embarrass someone without their consent. Our Community Guidelines spell this out in more detail and are part of these terms. Photo upload isn’t part of the app yet; when it ships, a photo attached to a quest will be visible to the crew present that night rather than published publicly, and these terms will cover it on the same footing as anything else you post.

In-app reporting and blocking are not built yet. Until they are, the way to report something or ask us to keep someone away from you is support@getrowdy.app, which reaches a person rather than a queue. We may review, remove, or restrict access to content that violates these terms or our guidelines, and may suspend or terminate accounts that violate them — repeatedly or severely — without a refund of any unspent Schmeckels or purchased items.

4. Schmeckels, packs, and cards

• Schmeckels are earned, never sold. You get them by playing — completing witnessed quests, streaks, and similar in-game activity. There is no way to purchase Schmeckels directly, with money or otherwise.
• Schmeckels have no cash value. They cannot be redeemed, exchanged, or transferred for real money, gift cards, or anything outside the app.
• Schmeckels are spent on packs, which contain collectible cards across rarity tiers. Pack contents are randomized; we don’t guarantee any specific card or rarity from a given pack.
• If we find evidence of fraud, exploitation, or manipulation of the economy (including bugs used to generate Schmeckels outside normal play), we may reverse the affected transactions and adjust or reset the balances involved.
• If Rowdy ever offers a paid subscription or other in-app purchase, that purchase is processed by Apple or Google under their own terms and refund policies — we don’t handle payment or billing directly.

5. Play safely — this is not optional

Rowdy facilitates real, in-person activity among real people, often somewhere social: a bar, a house party, a festival, a tailgate, a bach weekend. We don’t supervise any of those places and we’re not present for what happens there. You’re responsible for following the law, the venue’s rules, and your own judgment.

Never drink to complete a quest. No dare in Rowdy requires it, no dare should be interpreted to require it, and completing one that way isn’t a valid completion — report it if you see it framed that way. Every dare can be declined, for any reason or none, with zero penalty.

6. Disclaimers

Rowdy is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We don’t warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of bugs that affect gameplay or virtual items. To the fullest extent the law allows, Alexander Hoogland disclaims all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Alexander Hoogland and its founders won’t be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of Rowdy, including anything that happens during in-person activity a quest prompted — up to the greater of the amount you paid us in the past 12 months, or $50. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited under applicable law.

8. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

9. Changes

We may update these terms as Rowdy changes. We’ll update the date at the top of this page, and for material changes, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.
